Kenpachi has a wild and aggressive appearance, fitting with his personality. He wears his captain's jacket without sleeves, and with a more ragged look to it—-he acquired his jacket from the previous 11th Division captain, whom he defeated and killed in a duel in order to become captain. He styles his hair into liberty spikes with bells at the tips, which, Tite Kubo has remarked, makes his hair one of the most difficult to draw in the series. He also wears a special eye patch on his right eye lined with strange creatures created by the 12th Division. It absorbs the bulk of his power. Both of these are meant to give enemies an advantage, similar to his habit of fighting one-handed, as in an unhandicapped state he would defeat them so quickly that he would not be able to enjoy himself sufficiently to delve into a state of bloodlust, that being what he treasures most. He has a huge scar on the left side of his face, apparently gained well before his time in Soul Society (and even before finding Yachiru).Personality:
Despite his initial introduction as a lethal foe, Kenpachi later begins to play the role of the comical anti-hero in Bleach: though still self-centered and violent, his actions tend to be for the best and his relationship with his division and others is always portrayed comically. This comical shift is primarily centered around his appearances in the Bleach anime and omake stories, with the exception of the occasional diatribe between himself and Yachiru. He is depicted as having a very poor sense of direction, and is often depicted in omake stories asking his lieutenant Yachiru for directions to a particular place (who then randomly points in a direction even though she herself has a terrible sense of direction). Kenpachi lives for battle (evidenced by his method of attaining his rank) and enjoys a good fight more than anything. He even weakens himself in an effort to make any fight last longer. He also claims that injury and death are nothing but the price one pays for a good fight. Despite his group being the most bloodthirsty of the Gotei 13, they have their own code of ethics, different from the set rules of Soul Society, fitting with Kenpachi's portrayal as a free spirit. On various occasions, he is seen putting fun before work. Despite his violent tendencies Kenpachi will usually give up on a fight if his opponent is too injured to fight back, claiming that the fight is no longer fun. However, he will unhesitatingly kill his opponent if they refuse to end their fight on his terms as seen during his battles with Tosen and Nnoitora.History:
Prior to entering the Soul Reaper ranks, Zaraki resided in District 80, the most lawless district surrounding Soul Society. He became very proficient with swordsmanship, or at least fighting, while he was there, and eventually adopted the district's name, "Zaraki", as his surname. After leaving the district he found a small girl who, despite her young age, did not fear his sword. Since she had no name, he named her Yachiru in remembrance of the only person he ever admired. At the same time he also took on a name for himself: Kenpachi, the title bestowed upon the strongest swordsman, the one who has killed the most, and a tradition amongst captains of the 11th Division. Yachiru became inseparable from Zaraki from that point further, following him wherever he went, usually clinging to his back. After some time had passed, Zaraki found his way into Soul Society and killed the previous captain of the 11th Division, thus gaining his seat in the Gotei 13. As a new captain, Zaraki was begrudgingly forced to learn Kendo, though he made it a point to avoid using it in battle in order to prolong the experience of fighting as long as possible. In an interview, Tite Kubo noted that he would like to go into more depth about Zaraki.Offense: Advanced
(I just want to put this in here because I like it so much) Not long after becoming Captain, Kenpachi Slew a hollow that had killed 15 Soul Reapers. Later, when more of the same type of hollow appeared Yachiru turned the hollow fights into a contest to see who could cut off the most tentacles.
After Ichigo Kurosaki and his friends arrive in Soul Society, Kenpachi begins to hunt the strongest fighter in their group, and eventually battles Ichigo. During their fight, Ichigo becomes enough of a challenge that Kenpachi removes his eye patch, thus releasing the extra power it has been devouring. The battle ends in a draw, with Ichigo falling first and Kenpachi shortly after, both admitting defeat (though Kenpachi's sword breaks in the end, after it is deflected by the sudden manifestation of Ichigo's hollow mask, which spared the latter from death). Much later on, while searching for Ichigo with his friends in tow, they are headed off by 7th and 9th Division members. Kenpachi battles their captains Sajin Komamura and Kaname Tosen respectively, defeating Tosen and fighting off Komamura before Komamura runs away. He doesn't see Ichigo and his friends off when they leave the Soul Society. He tells Yachiru that he and Ichigo will certainly meet again because they are the only ones who are what they seem to be. Kenpachi also helps fight off the Bount invasion, and successfully defeats Maki Ichinose, a former member of his squad who left after Kenpachi killed his captain.
During the Arrancar arc, Kenpachi appears to Ichigo as his instinct and desire to win, explaining to him that they were both the type of people who live to fight (or fight to live) battle after battle. After Orihime is taken to Hueco Mundo, Kenpachi arrives with Byakuya Kuchiki to retrieve Tōshirō Hitsugaya's group and bring them back to Soul Society. Later, in Hueco Mundo, Kenpachi comes to Ichigo's aid during his battle with the arrancar Tesla, dealing the arrancar a mortal blow with a single strike and then engaging the 5th Espada Nnoitora in battle. Despite having "more fun than he has had in a long time," he suffers enough injuries to realize that he may die if the fight continues. He flashes back to his Kendo training, and grips his sword with two hands to deal Nnoitra a vicious, incapacitating blow. When Nnoitra refuses to accept defeat and charges Kenpachi, the latter kills him with another strike. Kenpachi then stands over Nnoitra's corpse, telling him their battle "was a blast". He later appears to save Ichigo from the Cero Espada Yammy by cutting off one of his legs, and further engaging him in combat with Byakuya Kuchiki. When it seems that Kenpachi and Byakuya are about to defeat him, Yammy undergoes a monsterous new transformation.

The soul reaper attacked Kenpachi head on, screaming loudly as he swung his Zanpakuto into Kenpachi's right arm. "Pathetic. You can't even cut me." Kenpachi looked on at the soul reaper with disappointment. He kicked the boy away, sending him to the brink of unconciousness. "What a disappointment." Kenpachi said as he turned and began to walk away, sword sheathed, a grimace on his face. The young shinigami was nearly unconcious as he began to fade he saw Yachiru's face looking over him. "Sorry mister, Kenny was just hoping for someone to play with! If you want to play with him again, I suggest you get stronger! Otherwise you won't even be able cut him." The boy's vision blurred and then he disappeared in a world of pain and blackness...
-Twelve Years Later-
Kenpachi had just gotten done with his evening bath and was waiting for his hair to set when he heard a knock on the door. He sighed as he put his Haori on and walked to the door. "Yeah? Who is it?" Kenpachi said as he opened the door. To his mild surprise, there was nobody there. He shut the door and turned around. Standing in front of him was a familiar face, although he could not place where he knew it from. It was a young face, the boy (looking not much younger than sixteen) had deep blue eyes, thin eye-lashes, and black lips.
Kenpachi just looked at the boy who stared back at him. "What do yo-" Kenpachi was saying as the boy had his sword drawn, blood dripping down the blade. There was a small stinging above Kenpachi's eye, he felt the blood run down his cheek, a short, deep cut now above his left eye. Kenpachi looked at the boy who disappeared for a brief second before Kenpachi felt another stinging sensation in his left arm. The boy had returned to his original position. The young Shinigami had his sword released, it was no bigger than a wakizashi. "You seem to have some extended knowledge of the flash step, who's squad do you belong to?" Kenpachi asked. "I do not belong to a squad." said the shinigami, becoming impatient. "My knowledge of flash step isn't important. I understand you are Kenpachi Zaraki, Captain of squad 11." Kenpachi nodded. "Then let us get started, My name is Rikku Kushagi. You killed my brothers Twelve and a half years ago. You defeated me, yet you did not kill me. Today, you are going to regret that mistake." Kenpachi remembered the boy, yet he did not care to reminisce about him. Kenpachi lept foreward and drew his sword in one swift movement. Rikku had disappeared, once again cutting Kenpachi. This time on his right shoulder. Rikku had appeared behind Kenpachi. "You are too slow to see me, too slow to hit me. Your attacks are powerful but compared to my spe-" Rikku just barley had time to move out of reach of Kenpachi's vicious thrust. "You talk too much!" Kenpachi said. Rikku looked at him and said "So be it." He cut Kenpachi on the left side of his stomach, followed by his left leg and then right arm. Kenpachi was figuring out Rikku's pattern, Left, left, right, left left right, left left- Gotcha! Kenpachi blocked the attack aimed for his neck, and thrust his Zanpakuto over Rikku's, stabbing him in the shoulder, creating a deep wound that bled profusley. Rikku ran out of the building to a more open area, Kenpachi following behind him, smiling.
This game of cat and mouse went on for a few minutes until Kenpachi stopped, looking to the left and right, up and down. Kenpachi felt Rikku's Zanpakuto pierce into the right side of his chest. He grabbed Rikku's hand and swung his sword around, catching Rikku in his left leg. He released Rikku and he jumped back "You're insane! I just pierced you deep into your chest and yet you stand!" Rikku said, favoring his leg and breathing hard. "We are warriors!" Said Kenpachi, smiling "Fighting is what we live for! If you are afraid to fight, afraid to die, you will die! Treat every battle as an opportunitty! To prove yourself! Prove that you are better! Live for nothing but the fight! Fight until you die and do not accept defeat until then!" Rikku looked on at Kenpachi in horror, Rikku realized that Kenpachi was right, he needed to prepare for death, and if he was going to die, he was going to give it his all.
He smiled at Kenpachi "Kuchisaki show us you're colors! Ban... KAI!" He screamed. Kenpachi could now feel the soul reaper's spritual pressure vastly increase, as if his opponent had been holding it back this entire time. There was a flash of green, a sound like an explosion. The smoke began to clear and Kenpachi looked on to see a dragon's tail wrapped around Rikku's right arm, and around his shoulders. The dragon was deep red, snake-like, and had black eyes that stared into the depths of your soul. It's wings had spikes on them and it had golden armor on its back. "Kenpachi! Release your bankai! Face me with equal power!" Kenpachi looked at the boy "So ignorant, aren't you?" Kenpachi said, Rikku looked on with confusion. "Don't you do any research? I don't know the name of my Zanpakuto, it is constantly released, however, I think I can spare to show you my true power." Before Rikku could say anything Kenpachi had undone the strap on his eyepatch.
It was silent for a brief second and then an ear shattering roar came from Kenpachi's spiritual pressure being released. There was a bright yellow light with the sillhouette of a skull that appeared. Rikku watched in horror until he remembered what Kenpachi had just told him, He stood ready for an attack. He swung his arm and the dragon lunged at Kenpachi with impossible speed. Kenpachi blocked the mouth of the dragon with his sword. He didn't even budge. He pushed back on the dragon and it fell back behind its master. Kenpachi lunged at Rikku who blocked with his bankai. He was quick but he was unskilled in the use of his bankai. He couldn't control it well enough to stop the attack quick enough. The force of the attack was so powerful, it sent a mini-shock wave from his slash. cutting Rikku's chest. Rikku knew he couldn't hold his bankai for much longer, it was draining his power quickly.
He decided that one attack was going to have to end it. Kuchisaki... I give you the rest of my power, I trust you to guide this attack and kill our enemy. Rikku told his Zanpakuto. He pushed his energy into this attack. Lunging foreward, with all his might he attacked. It was a futile effort. He found himslef impaled upon Kenpachi's Zanpakuto. It was right next to his heart.
Rikku fell, feeling the blackness envelop him. He watched as Kenpachi walked over to him, his sword already back in his sheath. "This... Is what it means to be a warrior..." Rikku smiled as he felt death embrace him. Kenpachi walked away and Yachiru came up to him "How was it Kenny?" she said. "It was only a warmup." Kenpachi walked to the edge of a cliff. Ichigo... One day... We will fight again... I live for that day...
Non-fighting (boring) sample:
Kenpachi was running, getting slightly annoyed by his Lieutenant's directions. "Over there Ken-chan!" She would say. He would follow her directions blindly but it was getting on his nerves that he wasn't getting where he wanted to go. "Are you sure?" Kenpachi asked Yachiru. "Of course I'm sure!" she said. They ran into a dead end.
Kenpachi sighed "Are you one HUNDRED percent sure?" He said, slightly annoyed. "Yeah! Right through here!" Kenpachi smiled and said "Hang on!" Kenpachi sprinted right through the wall into a city street. "Waddaya know... We're here." He said "I told you Kenny! I told you it was here!" Kenpachi sighed and smiled, for once she was right.
With Yachiru hanging on his back, he walked over to the dumpling stand that Ikkaku had set up. "Heya cue ball!" Yachiru yelled at him. "Why you little brat!" he yelled at Yachiru who was just smiling. "Knock it off you two, we just came here for dumplings and candy. You have the dumplings." Kenpachi said to Ikkaku. It took a few seconds for Ikkaku to realize that the Captain wanted some dumplings. He began to bag them when Yachiru smiled and said "Look Ken-chan! It's a big dumpling making smaller dumplings!" Ikkaku and Yachiru started yelling at eachother, Kenpachi patiently standing there. He sighed and said "Come on Yachiru, let's go get your candy..." Yachiru smiled "Okay Ken-chan! By baldy!" she said to Ikkaku who got mad and started yelling at Yachiru as Kenpachi walked on with her on his shoulder.
As soon as they got to the candy store the manager came out and said "Sorry, we just ran out of candy." Kenpachi sighed and smiled for he knew what was coming next.
